US Congress Threatens Online Gaming Industry
/ 12. April 2006
Over 70 million poker players in the United States are showing a strong resistance to the US Congresses latest efforts to ban online gaming in America.

Michael Bolcerek, president of the national Poker Players Alliance, held some interesting event this week on Capital Hill. Bolcerek brought three professional poker players to speak with the press and lobby congress member. There was even an evening reception for Alliance members and staff at which a few, money free, hands of Texas Hold'em were probably played.

Although online gaming is officially illegal in the United States, overseas online gaming sites bring thousands of online casinos into American homes each year. Congress is considering legislation that will either convince banks to block customer transactions with internet casinos, or force internet service providers to block access to poker web sites. Poker players say this ban infringes on the basic rights of citizens.

“I'd hate for 70 million poker players to wake up one day and learn that their game has been made illegal,” said Howard Lederer, a member of a pro duo group with his sister, Annie Duke. Bolcerek calls poker an American tradition as part of American culture as apple pie and motherhood.

“Poker is an American tradition. It has its roots in New Orleans, just like jazz. Many presidents played, including General [Ulysses S.] Grant, Harry Truman and Richard Nixon. So did Chief Justice William Rehnquist,” said Bolcerek, who became the paid president of the Poker Players Alliance a few months ago.

The alliance, and its over 20,000 members, estimate that out of the 70 million poker playing Americans, 23 million of them play online. Out of those 23 million 3 million play online for money.

Instead of placing a ban on online gaming the alliance wants Congress to regulate and tax online gaming. This would turn a billion dollar overseas industry into a profitable domestic business and create new jobs.

At least three different bills are pending in Washington that want to ban Americans playing online casino games for money. Credit card companies have been ordered not to allow customers to use their accounts for offshore online gaming, but such a variety of other online payment methods exist that this has made little effect on online gaming in the country.
